Established on August 10, 2024, the Child Council is the first of its kind in Borneo and plays a vital role in promoting youth participation in civic development.

In his address, Wee congratulated the new members and reaffirmed MBKS’s commitment to empowering young voices in local governance.

“You have been chosen because you’ve shown strong potential, leadership, and the willingness to speak up for other children in our city,” he was quoted as saying.

He emphasised that the Child Council is more than just a symbolic initiative — it serves as a meaningful platform for children to have their voices genuinely heard.

Since its formation, the Council has provided valuable input in enhancing public spaces, including parks, walkways, and other child-friendly amenities in Kuching South.

The mayor also reminded members of the Child Council of the importance of collaboration, empathy, and active participation.

“Leadership is not about being the loudest voice in the room. It’s about listening, understanding others, and doing what is right for everyone,” he noted.

Wee further encouraged both new and existing members to contribute their individual strengths — whether in communication, creativity, planning, or even quiet observation — to the team.

“This Child Council is not about competition. It’s about collaboration. Everyone has a role to play, and every contribution matters,” he added.

The mayor also expressed gratitude to the parents for their support and acknowledged the contributions of the original 17 Council members who laid the foundation for a more inclusive and child-responsive city.

As Kuching South continues its journey toward becoming a model child-friendly city, MBKS remains committed to empowering the Child Council in voicing children’s needs, fostering community values, and shaping policies that prioritise the well-being of the city’s youngest citizens. — DayakDaily
