LUNDU, March 4: The Centre of Technology Excellence (Centexs) Lundu’s aerospace programmes are set to play a crucial role in developing a highly skilled workforce for Sarawak’s aviation sector, directly supporting local airlines such as the upcoming Sarawak-owned AirBorneo.
Minister of Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin highlighted that these programmes would reduce Sarawak’s reliance on foreign expertise by nurturing homegrown talent to fill key positions in the aviation and aerospace industries.
“The aerospace sector is vital to both the local and national economy. Through world-class training, Centexs Lundu’s Aerospace Academy is equipping Sarawak’s workforce with the skills needed to meet the industry’s growing demands,” he said in a speech during his visit to the academy today.
He added that the academy’s specialised programmes are designed to produce skilled technicians and engineers aligned with the needs of local airlines.
“These graduates will play a critical role in aircraft maintenance and repair, ensuring the safety and reliability of AirBorneo’s fleet in the near future,” he added.
CENTEXS Lundu offers an excellent range of programmes, including Certificate in Aerospace Machining Operation, Certificate in Aerospace Sheet Metal and Certificate in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (Aeroplane Turbine, Helicopter Turbine, and Avionics).
These programmes provide students with essential technical skills, from machining operations to aircraft maintenance, preparing them to tackle real-world challenges in the aviation sector.
Lee also emphasised that the practical training at Centexs ensures graduates are well-equipped to work on specific aircraft used by Sarawak-based airlines, enhancing their employability and immediate contribution to the industry.
He further stressed that the collaboration between Centexs and local airlines is a prime example of how academic institutions can support the aviation ecosystem by ensuring compliance with regulatory and operational standards while fostering local talent.
“I encourage even closer cooperation between Centexs, AirBorneo, and other industry players to ensure that training remains relevant to the evolving needs of the aviation sector. By working together, we can continue to provide training that meets the technical, operational, and safety standards essential for both domestic and international growth,” he said.
Also present at the event were Centexs chief executive officer (CEO) Dato Syeed Mohd Hussien Wan Abdul Rahman, Centexs Lundu Campus Dr Nor Ashikin Abdul Rahman and chief academic officer of the Aerospace, Digital and Green Energy Dr Dayang Hanani Abg Ibrahim. — DayakDaily
