KUCHING, May 31: The Council of Churches of Malaysia (CCM) has appealed to fellow Christians to participate generously in helping to reduce the country’s debt.

CCM general secretary Rev Dr Hermen Shastri said the crowd funding effort is consistent with the Christian community’s wishes for Malaysia.

“In view of the recent announcement by our Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad of the formation of a public crowd funding effort for Malaysians to donate and help the nation’s economy, CCM is issuing this special appeal to our member congregations to play their part in this extraordinary effort.

“In line with our prayers of blessing for the nation and the aspiration of the new government, we hope that each congregation will take a special offering and send it to CCM. Give and share your wealth for the benefit of all citizens of our country,” Hermen said in a statement today.

Those who wishes to donate via cheques, are to make the cheques in favour of “Council of Churches of Malaysia” and to be written on the back “Malaysia’s Hope Fund”.

Those who wish to bank in direct to the CCM account, may do so via Maybank account no. 514169656889.

Donors are requested to email a copy of the bank-in slip to cchurchm1948@gmail.com

Hermen said at an appointed time, CCM will present the fund to the leaders of the government, accompanied with prayers for the well-being of the nation.

On May 30, the government announced the formation of a public crowd funding effort, dubbed Malaysia’s Hope Fund (Tabung Harapan Malaysia or THM) for Malaysians to donate to and help the country’s economy.

As at 3pm today, THM has received RM7 million donated by Malaysians nationwide.

Dr Mahathir said THM was formed following concerns from fellow Malaysians over the economic mismanagement by the former Barisan Nasional government.

However, only donations in Ringgit Malaysia will be accepted, which can be transferred to Maybank Banking Berhad account no. 566010626452 under the account name Tabung Harapan Malaysia. — DayakDaily
