KUCHING, Nov 9: Causing hurt or injuries to others and unarmed gang robbery have emerged as the most prevalent major crimes in Sarawak, according to statistics released by Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri.
In the first 10 months of 2023, there were 222 cases of causing hurt or injuries to others, while unarmed gang robbery saw a significant increase, registering 101 cases compared to 64 cases in the same period in 2022.
Rape was the third most common felony in Sarawak with 87 cases as of October this year, followed by unarmed robbery, with 47 cases.
Murder cases in the first 10 months of 2023 had dropped to 12, when compared to 20 cases in 2022.
Meanwhile, five cases of armed gang robbery and two cases of armed robbery were registered during the same period of time.
Mohd Azman, speaking in a press conference after the opening of the Sarawak Police Headquarters Pavilion, which was streamed live on social media, highlighted that in general, total major crime cases had decreased by four percent in the first 10 months of 2023, totaling 476 cases compared to 498 cases in 2022. — DayakDaily
