KUCHING, July 27: Efforts are being made to transform the Bukit Saban state constituency into a hub for ‘Baju Dabong’ (also known as Baju Kebaya) dressmaking.
According to a press release, approximately 265 women from 25 longhouses in the area have been trained in this traditional handicraft, each receiving a sewing machine to help them continue their dress-making endeavours and enhance their skills.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also Bukit Saban assemblyman, acknowledged his wife, Dato Doreen Mayang, for her initiative in reviving the production of this traditional dress.
He was speaking at a certificate presentation ceremony for another group of 20 participants from local longhouses who recently completed their ‘Baju Dabong’ making course.
Uggah emphasised the significant income potential of the Kebaya dress, which remains popular among women in Indonesia and Malaysia.
He recounted a visit to a Kebaya store in Singapore where his wife inquired if the store owner would be interested in purchasing Kebaya dresses from Sarawak.
The store owner expressed interest but requested assurance on both quantity and quality.
“Thus, we must consistently upgrade our standards in production. To this end, we will seek out relevant new technologies.
“My wife recently acquired a computerised sewing machine, which enabled a participant to complete a Kebaya dress in three days instead of two weeks with a regular sewing machine,” he was quoted as saying.
The deputy premier also mentioned plans, alongside Betong Member of Parliament Dr Richard Rapu, to establish a centre equipped with more computerised sewing machines.
They are also exploring various marketing platforms, including online avenues, to expand their reach.
“I’m pleased to note that the Sarawak branch of the National Handicraft Centre is ready to assist in this endeavour,” Uggah added.
Political secretary to the Premier, Roselind Mapong, was also present at the function. — DayakDaily
