KUCHING, Nov 11: Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek has rebutted Padungan assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen’s recent claim that Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) dealers are refusing the exchange of yellow liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders for red ones in Sibu.

During a press conference, Chieng presented documented evidence listing 472 customers in Sibu who have exchanged their yellow LPG cylinders for red ones up to Nov 7, 2024.

Furthermore, each household may have up to seven gas cylinders.

“Until Nov 7, 2024, my service centre had helped the people and we sent (the gas cylinders) to Petros dealers.

“Petros will then assign their dealers to deliver (red gas cylinders) to the ones that requested for the exchange.

“Thus, Chong’s claim regarding our Petros dealers in Sibu is not correct and I need to justify this,” he told reporters at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) Complex here today.

Asked whether it is difficult to facilitate the cylinder exchange, Chieng explained that the customers only need to inform the Petros dealers if they wish to do so.

“When the dealers deliver the cylinder to the customer’s house, it will cost RM26.60 with some transportation fees incurred. It is as simple as that,” he added.

Earlier, Chong who is the Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman, claimed that the DAP members in Sibu have received complaints from residents, stating that Petros’ exclusive role as the gas aggregator has placed an additional burden on consumers.

He called on the Sarawak government to ensure Petros accepts yellow cylinders to avoid further inconvenience and costs for Sarawakians. — DayakDaily
