KUCHING, Jan 21: Amendments to Sarawak’s Building Ordinance, expected to be tabled no later than November, will introduce updated guidelines, including Green Building Index (GBI), provisions for electric vehicle (EV) chargers, and advanced fire safety standards recommended by the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba).

In a news report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian emphasised that the updated ordinance to enhance safety and sustainability would also apply to old and historical buildings, ensuring they adhere to Bomba’s maintenance and safety standards.

“A grace period will be provided to building owners to facilitate compliance with the new regulations.

“Don’t worry—we’re accommodating and will allow sufficient time for building owners to meet the guidelines,” he said.
Speaking at a press conference after officiating the Chinese New Year 2025 Fire Safety Campaign organised by Bomba Sarawak at Wisma Wan, Tabuan Jaya today, Dr Sim stressed the need to modernise the Ordinance to meet current demands and ensure uniform safety standards across Sarawak.

“Fire doesn’t discriminate—it doesn’t matter who you are; it will burn indiscriminately. The public should review these amendments carefully. While we’ve always had a building ordinance, it has not kept pace with current needs,” he stated.

This initiative underscores Sarawak’s commitment to modernising its building standards and prioritising public safety and sustainability.
