KUCHING, April 30: Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri urged the public to be bold and speak out against all forms of sexual harassment.

She said this in the wake of a viral incident involving the harassment of a 15-year-old girl by an e-hailing driver. The incident, captured on video and widely shared on social media, showed the driver allegedly asking the teenage passenger to remove her hijab while on her way home.

The girl’s father, upon learning of the incident, demanded that the driver accompany them to the police station to file a report.

“The strong action of the victim’s father who urged the man to go to the police station to file a report reflects the increasing awareness of the community on the issue of sexual harassment, which should not be taken lightly,” Nancy Shukri said in a statement.

“As the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, I call on all parties to dare to speak out against sexual harassment in order to defend the dignity and safety of the community.

“To the teenagers out there, do not remain silent. You have the right to act for your safety and dignity,” she said.

The Minister also reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening legal protections through the full implementation of a tribunal under the Sexual Harassment Act.

“I also invite everyone — women, men, parents, educators and colleagues — to work together to build a safer and more dignified environment, by speaking out when faced with or witnessing any form of sexual harassment, especially in an effort to protect children and women,” she urged. – DayakDaily
