Borneo Int’l Band Festival to debut in Kuching with exhilarating showcase of youth band talent across Borneo

KUCHING, July 10: The inaugural Borneo International Band Festival (BIBF) 2025 is set to make a grand debut this Saturday (July 12) at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak (SUTS) here, promising an exhilarating weekend of rhythm, harmony, and high-energy performances.

According to a press release, BIBF 2025, jointly organised by the Malaysia Concert & Marching Band Association (MCMBA) and the Kuching Concert & Marching Band Association (KCMBA), will bring together vibrant youth concert bands from across Borneo in a spectacular showcase of musical talent and cultural exchange.

BIBF 2025 will feature Open and Scholastic Class competitions judged by an esteemed international and local panel, promising audiences a full day of stunning performances, passionate artistry, and unforgettable moments.

“The festival is more than just a competition; it is a movement to uplift the musical landscape of Borneo, ignite connections among youth musicians, and spark joy through shared musical experiences,” stated the press release.

The press release further noted that the highlight of the festival will be the Grand Closing and Award Ceremony, which will be officiated by Sarawak Deputy Premier and Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who will also present awards to outstanding talents of the day.

Festival director and MCMBA president Wilson Tan described the festival as “more than a competition—it’s a celebration of community, talent, and the power of music to inspire.”

“We are deeply honoured by the support of YB Datuk Amar Dr Sim and look forward to showcasing the energy and excellence of our young musicians,” he was quoted as saying.

Among the region’s top ensembles are the Kuching Wind Symphony, champions of the Malaysia International Wind Festival (miwFEST) 2024; the internationally recognised St Joseph’s School Marching Band, renowned for their precision and artistry; as well as other talented bands and ensembles from Sibu, Miri, Sabah, and beyond.

BIBF 2025 continues on July 13 with an exclusive educational clinic and band exchange session led by Dr Nipat Kanchanahud of Kasetsart University, Bangkok, a renowned figure in Thailand’s music education scene, reflecting the festival’s commitment to learning, collaboration, and elevating musical standards in the region.
