KUCHING, Sept 24: The Borneo Games could potentially expand on an international scale, encompassing not only more states in Malaysia but also neighbouring countries in the region.
Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Karim Abdul Rahman Hamzah proposed that future editions of the Games could extend beyond the traditional regions of Sabah, Sarawak, Labuan, Brunei, and West Kalimantan, Indonesia.
“We could invite athletes from nearby countries, such as the Philippines and Northern Australia, for example.
“This would enhance competitiveness and contribute to athlete development, benefiting the Games in the long run,” he said at the launching of Borneo Games Kuching 2025 at the Indoor Stadium today.
He clarified, however, that any decision would be made after the conclusion of the current Games, during discussions among officials to determine the next steps.
“As the Games are held biennially, officials from participating contingents will convene to decide which Borneo region or province will host the next edition. It will be up to each region and province to determine which countries they wish to invite,” he said.
Abdul Karim expressed optimism that the contingents would welcome such an initiative, noting that international sporting events worldwide often extend invitations to other nations to elevate the competition.
He also emphasised that there is no fixed gold medal target for the Borneo Games 2025, as the primary goal is to revive the event after a 12-year hiatus.
“Our joy comes from being able to organise the Games and rekindle the spirit of camaraderie across Borneo. That is what matters most. Unity in the region through sports brings the greatest celebration.
“While medal counts are not a concern, fostering a spirit of camaraderie remains our main priority,” he added.
Also present at the event were his deputies Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu who is also chairman of the Borneo Games Kuching 2025, and Datuk Ripin Lamat, who is also the head of the Sarawak Contingent for the Games. — DayakDaily
