KUCHING, May 1: The Borneo Empurau Farm and Resort (BEFR) in Serian has been described as a tourism jewel with vast potential to become one of the region’s top attractions once fully developed, said Serian District Council (MDS) chairman Dato Peter Minos.

Calling the resort “very impressive”, Minos said it is a must-visit destination for those wanting to experience the best of what Serian has to offer.

“You must visit and see the BEFR in Serian to really admire and appreciate this tourism spot. I did, and what a place it is,” he said in a statement today.

During a recent visit to the resort led by owner Datuk Yong Fook Heng, Minos and four MDS councillors were given a full tour of the facilities, which include a large covered swimming pool, a well-decorated banquet hall for dinners and functions, exhibits of the prized empurau fish, a kids’ racing track, gardens of vegetables and fruits, as well as animal and bird displays.

Minos said it was clear that Yong had invested millions into developing the resort, which features unique longhouse-style units for rent and scenic chalets perched atop a huge pond.

“Even the toilets are luxurious—fit for a king—and dubbed as ‘BMW’ status. Truly impressive,” he added.

Minos believes that within two to three years, once development is complete, the resort will become a class of its own—perhaps even the best in the area.

At the same time, he noted that improving access to the resort is crucial, especially the connecting road from the main Kuching-Serian highway.

“Once the access road is completed, thousands will visit, whether for a day trip or to stay overnight,” he said.

“Datuk Yong mentioned that parking expansion is already being considered because the current number of vehicles, especially today, is a challenge.”

Minos revealed that MDS is also looking into enhancing other tourism sites in Serian, such as the Ranchan Pool and a waterfall spot along the Tebedu Road.

“Our idea is to connect the three tourism spots—Empurau Resort, Ranchan Pool and the waterfall—into a one-day package for local visitors,” he said.

He further added that Serian, like Samarahan, holds great potential in tourism and agriculture, and should be developed as a supporting satellite town to Kuching. – DayakDaily
