MIRI, July 12: Boniface Bada @ Bada Enjah has been officially appointed as the new Iban Temenggong for the Miri Division, succeeding Wilson Atong who has retired from the role.

His appointment, effective from Jan 1, 2025, to Dec 31, 2028, was formalised during a certificate presentation ceremony for community leaders officiated by Sarawak Minister for Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development, Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, at the Sarawak Islamic Complex here on Friday (July 11).

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, Dr Rundi underscored the vital role of community leaders and village chiefs (KMKK) in acting as intermediaries between the government and the people.

“The KMKK system forms the backbone of grassroots administration. It ensures that the voices of people from all ethnic backgrounds are conveyed in an organised and respectful manner,” he said in his address.

He stressed the importance of clearly defining the roles and responsibilities of each level of leadership, from Temenggong to Pemanca, Penghulu, and Ketua Kaum, to ensure that duties are carried out professionally and with integrity, without overstepping boundaries.

“Those who are underperforming should step down,” he added firmly.

Dr Rundi also reminded community leaders to maintain a clean image, uphold integrity, and serve as role models within their communities.

As the assemblyman for Kemena, he also highlighted the urgent need for a new Resident’s Office in Miri, noting that the current temporary facility is inadequate for the division’s expanding administrative needs.

Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil, expressed hope that the newly appointed Temenggong would play an active role in cultural, customs and community affairs.

“The Temenggong must be present at key events such as Mantar Gawai in Marudi and Beluru and regularly meet with Pemanca and Penghulu to ensure customary laws remain relevant in today’s context,” he said.

He also called on Pemanca, Penghulu, and Tuai Rumah to fully support the new Temenggong for the greater good of the community.

Miri Division Resident, Galong Luang, highlighted the uniqueness of Sarawak’s community leadership system compared to other states in Malaysia.

“In Sarawak, we have three tiers of community leadership — Temenggong at the divisional level, Pemanca at the district level, and Penghulu at the zonal level.

“Additionally, roles such as Tuai Rumah, Ketua Kaum, and Kapitan represent grassroots communities in longhouses and settlements,” he explained.

Galong added that appointments are made through a selection panel chaired by the Resident, with input from the District Officer and local elected representatives. Criteria include age, health, education, understanding of customs, and the ability to handle Native Court matters (for non-Muslims). — DayakDaily
