MIRI, July 25: A lifeless baby girl with her umbilical cord still attached was discovered in a drain at Lorong Aru 8, Kampung Luak, behind SM Sains Miri this morning, prompting a police investigation under Section 318 of the Penal Code for concealment of birth.
Miri District Police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah confirmed that a distress call was received via MERS 999 at around 9.50am by officers at the Miri District Police Headquarters (IPD) operations room.
According to initial investigations, the baby was found by workers from an engineering company, who were carrying out underground pipe installation works in the area.
“The baby girl was already without signs of life when discovered. She appeared full-term and fully formed, with the umbilical cord already severed,” he said in a statement today.
The body was sent to the Miri General Hospital’s Forensic Department for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
“Police have opened an investigation paper and are probing the case under Section 318 of the Penal Code, which carries a punishment of up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction,” he added.
Mohd Farhan urged the public to refrain from speculating or spreading sensitive content related to the case on social media, as it could cause public anxiety and interfere with ongoing investigations.
Members of the public with any information regarding the incident are encouraged to come forward and assist police in their inquiries. Information can be relayed directly to Miri IPD at 085-433400 or 085-433730, or to Investigating Officer Nor Sharilazuwan Bin Mohammad at 011-23321957. — DayakDaily
