KUCHING, July 21: A fire broke out at a row of shophouses along Jalan Khoo Peng Loong in Sibu today, affecting 10 out of 13 units.
In a report from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), a call was received at 1.29pm, and firefighters from the Sibu Central station were deployed, with assistance from the Sungai Merah and Sibu Jaya stations.
The affected premises include food outlets, vehicle spare parts shops, and fishing equipment and hardware stores.
The firefighting operation was made more challenging as the blaze spread rapidly to neighbouring premises. A high fire load intensified the fire, while the presence of combustible materials accelerated its development.
In addition, limited access to the operational area hampered the movement of firefighters, making suppression efforts more difficult.
Firefighters carried out firefighting operations using both defensive and offensive tactics to contain and extinguish the blaze.
The fire was brought under control at 8.30pm.
