Bintulu, Sibu under thunderstorm warning until 9pm; Serian’s API rises to 190 as of 6pm (Aug 11)

KUCHING, Aug 11: Thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds are expected in Bintulu (Tatau) and Sibu (Selangau and Sibu) until 9pm tonight.

According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia), the thunderstorm warning was issued at 5pm today.

“The warning is issued when there are signs indicating that thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20 mm per hour are imminent or expected to occur for more than an hour.

“A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning valid for no more than six hours for each issuance,” it said.

Bintulu and Sibu are among the 11 areas in Sarawak that recorded unhealthy Air Pollution Index (API) readings.

Based on data from the Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) as of 6pm today, Bintulu recorded an API reading of 159 while Sibu recorded 155.

Serian continued to record the highest API reading at 190, while Limbang and Kapit remained the only areas in the State with moderate API levels of 73 and 78, respectively.

Other areas that recorded unhealthy API readings are Samarahan (168), Kuching (167), Sri Aman (157), Samalaju (155), Sarikei (155), Mukah (154), Miri (142), and ILP Miri (115). — DayakDaily
