KUCHING, Feb 12: Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad (BPHB) is advancing its digital transformation with an upgraded marine management system to enhance vessel monitoring, expanded CCTV coverage and the deployment of drone capabilities, including a nested drone system, said Group chief executive officer (CEO) Dato Ruslan Abdul Ghani.
Speaking to reporters after a media appreciation event on Wednesday (Feb 11), he said these initiatives are part of the company’s broader plan to become a fully digitalised port by 2030.
“We started off with implementing our smart gate. We have installed licence plate recognition, and at the moment we are installing our port operating system. It is state of the art,” he said.
Ruslan explained that the port operating system is modelled on technologies used at leading global ports and is intended to deliver a fully integrated operational environment for both customers and port operators.
He noted that the deployment of drone technology places BPHB among the first in Malaysia to implement a nested drone system.
The port operating system has been implemented at Samalaju Industrial Port since September last year, with further rollout scheduled in the coming months.
“By April this year, we will complete the port operating system at Tanjung Kidurong Port as well as MyPort,” he said.
Looking further ahead, Ruslan said BPHB’s long-term strategy is to move towards full automation by 2050, including developing a digital twin of its operations to support data-driven planning and optimisation.
Addressing global trade conditions, he noted that the company has not been significantly affected by United States tariff measures due to limited direct exposure.
“We do not trade a lot with the US. Our markets are mainly China, Japan and some European countries.
“If China or Japan are affected by US tariffs, then obviously we will feel it. But so far, in the past year or so, we have not seen any major impact,” he said. — DayakDaily
