Bintulu MP calls for probe into allegations of gangsterism, possible moles within police force

KUCHING, Sept 18: Bintulu MP Dato Sri Tiong King Sing is urging the police to investigate into a recent incident allegedly involving gangsters harassing local security personnel in Bintulu.

He said the news had been making rounds online and creating an uproar which not only caused Bintulu residents to feel uneasy but also caused entrepreneurs and investors to worry about making any investments in the town.

“The unrest caused by these gang members have affected the potential and prospects for entrepreneurs to develop their businesses in Bintulu.

“I strongly urge the police to take heed of these developments and take the necessary action promptly,” he said in a statement today.

Tiong who is also Dudong assemblyman pointed out that there were also rumours that those who try to report gang activity to the police are often harassed afterwards for being whistleblowers.

“They will be threatened by unsavoury people after reporting the case.

“To prevent this, it is absolutely important for the police to launch internal investigations to root out the moles in their departments.

“Otherwise, they won’t have the public trust and the people will not ever feel safe,” he added.

Tiong said that with over 20 years of experience being an MP, he believed that those who are involved in gangsterism will willingly put down their weapons and turn over a new leaf, if they are given the opportunity to turn around.

“This has been my experience, when I sit down for food and drink with them, talking to them about doing something worth their strength.

“But it does not mean that they should be allowed to get away with breaking the law. If anyone violates the law, they must face the appropriate punishments, without exceptions,” he emphasised. — DayakDaily
