KUCHING, Dec 17: In a landmark step towards economic advancement, community development, and sustainability in Sarawak, the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) has acquired a 10% equity stake in Pertama Ferroalloys Sdn Bhd through a Share Transfer Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
According to a news report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), the agreement was officially signed during a ceremony in Tokyo, Japan today, with Pertama Ferroalloys chairman and managing director Hirotaka Suzuki and BDA general manager Datu Muhamad Yakup Kari representing their respective organisations.
The momentous occasion was witnessed by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
This strategic partnership builds on the collaborative successes of Pertama Ferroalloys and BDA, notably the bamboo cultivation project launched in November 2023, which underscored their shared commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation.
Speaking at the event, Suzuki highlighted that the collaboration extends beyond financial investment, aiming to deliver societal and environmental benefits to Sarawak.
“This partnership will foster economic growth not only in Bintulu but across Sarawak and Malaysia. It will enhance local communities’ wellbeing and set a benchmark for organisations and leaders to drive sustainable initiatives, aligning with the visionary Post Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030,” he said.
Pertama Ferroalloys operates Malaysia’s first large-scale manganese alloys and ferrosilicon smelting plant, producing high-quality manganese alloy products for the global steel industry.
The company remains steadfast in its dual focus on sustainability and profitability, reflecting its dedication to long-term value creation.
This collaboration marks a pivotal moment for Sarawak’s development, reinforcing the State’s trajectory towards achieving a balanced blend of economic progress and sustainable practices.
The event was also attended by prominent figures, including Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Malaysian Ambassador to Japan Dato’ Shahril Effendi Abd Ghany, Sarawak Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, and several other high-ranking government officials and policymakers. — DayakDaily
