KUCHING, May 4: The Bidayuh community is set to organize five main events in conjunction with the upcoming Gawai Dayak celebration 2024.

According to a news report from Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) today, Kuching division Bidayuh Temenggong, Atok Dirop, said the five events are platforms to highlight the culture and heritage of the Dayak community in Sarawak while contributing to economic vitality.

He said the first event is the ‘Gawai Bazaar’, a large-scale carnival to be held at MJC Batu Kawa from May 16 to 26, followed by the ‘Gawai Bau Carnival’, which will also start on May 16 and continue until May 18.

“Over the course of three days, we will hold a folk stage featuring cultural performances and playing gongs.

“We will also organise a parade from Dewan Suarah Bau to Lobuh Bau. All the contingents will enjoy the food sold by the stall operators opened at Lobuh Bau on May 18,” he said.

He mentioned that the ‘Gawai Carnival Serian Division Level’ will be the third event, scheduled for June 6 to 8 in the Siburan district.

He also noted that this event would have slight differences compared to the previous one, as the Sangon and Dari Pogan Rowing Competition will be held, including a special Gong Playing Competition for the Bidayuh community from Serian, Padawan, Bau, and Lundu.

“The fourth event is the State level ‘Gawai Parade’ or ‘Niti Daun’, which will be held on June 15, starting from Tun Jugah Building to Padang Merdeka, involving contingents from various districts and divisions as in previous years, including decorated vehicles that will brighten up the city of Kuching.

“The closing event will be the ‘Gawai Gala Dinner’ at the Borneo Convention Center Kuching (BCCK) which will bring the Sarawak Level Gawai Dayak Day 2024 celebration to a close with full splendor,” he said. — DayakDaily
