KUCHING, Aug 20: The Sarawak government’s move to offer free education for students attending State-owned universities and higher learning institutions starting from 2026 is ‘the best gift for the people’.

In a statement, political pundit Dato Peter Minos said that he met Sarawakians who were pleased with the news, as it meant their children could enter university with the Sarawak government covering their fees.

“The news brings joy and happiness to all Sarawakians, especially to the low-income groups,” he said.

Minos added that nothing is greater than giving skills and expertise to the people because as Sarawak’s industries keep growing in the coming years, more skilled people are needed.

“In the long run, this investment in higher education will put Sarawak on top—maybe the very top in Malaysia.

“As all say, higher education is the enabler of all things, especially in progress and development,” he said.

He went on to say that Sarawak is the only state in Malaysia offering free tertiary education to its people and thanked Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who knew how to obtain the funds for the initiative.

“One fellow Sarawakian said to me that this is the best that the Premier has done for us—and I fully agree.” — DayakDaily
