SIBU, March 18: Indonesia is seeking to strengthen its relationship with Sarawak in trade and commerce.
Speaking at a dialogue session with Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) today, Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching, Raden Sigit Witjaksono said with both sides having similarities in their culture and language, it would be an advantage for both to explore further cooperation in trading, infrastructure, telecommunication, shipbuilding, logistic, tourism and food industries.
“The shifting of our capital from Jakarta to Nusantara present a good potential for both sides since we are located in the same island close by. We are also close to Sabah and Brunei, which means more opportunities to grow together,” he said.
“By 2024, between four to five of Indonesia’s ministries will be shifting their offices there. Among them is our Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” he said.
Wijaksono said his side not only could collaborate on trade but also on manpower supply to the state’s plantation sector.
“The memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the recruitment of domestic workers and general labourers between both countries is in the final stages now. Hopefully it can be done by April 1 when Malaysia reopens its borders,” he said.
President of SCCCI, Datuk Lau Cheng Kiong said the state and Indonesia should strive to enhance and consolidate the foundation of regional cooperation, and work to create a strong autonomous and independent cooperative community.
“Being close neighbours, we have some similarities in our respective cultures and can understand each others language. This definitely is a big advantage and gives rise to ample opportunities and potential for trading activities and tourism related investments.
“The establishment of trading activities will be mutually beneficial to businesses, especially small and medium industries,” he said.
Lau said both should share the concept of growth with mutual benefit and hope that through this dialogue session and exchange of ideas, Sibu businessmen will understand more about the latest developments in Indonesia and explore potential investment opportunities. — DayakDaily
