BAU, May 22: Adis Tiporang Riverside, a haven for travellers here in Bau, is the second homestay in Sarawak to be upgraded to Kampungstay under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), with more products to offer.
The 64-year-old kampungstay owner, Jessie James, said his riverside resort, which was established in 2004, began as a homestay where visitors would be staying with his family under the same roof, with little to offer.
It was only in 2010 when he invested heavily on the development of his homestay and gradually added more facilities, which led to MOTAC recommending for it to be upgraded to a kampungstay just last year.
“In 2010, 10 years before I retired, I thought I needed to do something. Since I wanted to continue running this place, I said to myself that I might as well do it properly.
“So, I started building more facilities and upgrading the place to make sure that when I retired, it’s already established. It’s sort of like my retirement plan,” Jessie told DayakDaily when met today.
Looking forward, he said he is considering to curate a tourism package for foreigners, which may include Bidayuh food, traditional dance performances, and some cultural activities.
He is also looking at offering programmes such as night walk and bird-watching in the future for those who are interested.
Before retirement, Jessie was a teacher in SMK Julau in Sarikei, SMK Asajaya, and SMK Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Gapor in Stampin, Kuching.
The accommodation at Adis Tiporang Riverside Kampungstay includes a longhouse with eight rooms (RM80 per room), two chalets with double rooms (RM300 for premium, RM200 for normal), and a chalet with single room (RM120).
All rooms are equipped with clean mattresses and blankets while the chalets come with necessary electrical appliances, kitchen utensils, cutlery, and individual toilets.
Visitors may also visit the place for day trips to swim and fish at the Adis River or hold barbecue events.
