KUCHING, May 19: A new secondary school, a fire station and a police station are urgently needed in the Batu Kitang constituency to meet the needs of the rapidly growing population.

Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang pointed out that many children in the constituency are forced to enrol in secondary schools further away as at present, there are only two secondary schools—SMK Arang and SMK Wira Penrissen—in the area.

“There is an urgent need for a second government secondary school to meet the growing number of students.

“Not only that, we also need a Bomba (Fire and Rescue Department) station to be built in Batu Kitang as well,” he highlighted when debating the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak’s address in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.

With the nearest Bomba stations located in Kuching and Serian, Lo said it is only apt to set up a Bomba station in Batu Kitang constituency.

“In between Kuching and Padawan, a major police station in my constituency would also fit nicely,” he added.

Highlighting that flooding is a growing threat in many parts of the world including Batu Kitang, he emphasised the need for practical and sizable drains to be planned and constructed leading directly to the river.

“This is to efficiently and effectively address the surface runoff from our heavy and incessant rainfall.

“Our drains are zig-zag and MSMA (Urban Storm Water Management) alone will not be able to address the flooding problems due to intense development or to accommodate the design of an adequate drainage system,” he said. — DayakDaily
