KUCHING, Aug 13: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has reiterated a stern warning to contractors who were awarded government projects to complete their projects on time or risk being blacklisted.

In a press release issued today, Dr Sim expressed concern over the delayed progress of the construction of a covered basketball court at the Batu Kawa Min Lit Secondary School worth RM350,000.

The project is part of Dr Sim’s rural transformation programme (RTP) initiative for Batu Kawah, in which he is its elected representative.

“As of the progress report, construction should have reached 74 per cent completion by now. However, it has only achieved 55 per cent, indicating a delay of 19 per cent,” said the press release.

During an inspection by Sarawak Implementation Monitoring Unit (SIMU) along with Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), Kuching Resident’s Office, and Batu Kawah Service Centre, the relevant authorities issued a warning to the contractor regarding the delay.

“The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) had already issued two warning letters to the contractor on April 30 and July 16, respectively.”

MPP awarded the project to Syarikat Arus Mekar on April 4, 2024, with construction expected to take five months and be completed by Sept 3, 2024.

“The Sarawak government’s stance is very clear: fulfilling government contracts is a matter of both credibility and responsibility. Contractors must complete projects on time to ensure that the ultimate purpose of government development, which is benefiting the rakyat, is effectively realised,” the press release quoted Dr Sim as saying.

He also pointed out that the Sarawak government is poised to undertake more development projects with Sarawak’s increased revenue in recent years. — DayakDaily
