KUCHING, Nov 28: The construction of the Batang Rambungan Bridge, Lundu has reached 60 per cent completion and remains on track to be fully completed by May 2027, says Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD) Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas today.
According to a news report by TVS, Uggah revealed this today during an inspection by MIPD and Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak, and expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far.
The bridge, which spans 560 metres and costs RM82 million, is a key component of the Sarawak Coastal Road Network project, aiming to enhance connectivity and reduce travel time for communities in the area.
“This (Batang Rambungan Bridge) project was a sick project and now we have a rescue contractor to restore it, and they have already started taking over this project a few weeks ago on November 19,” said Uggah.
Currently, works on the bridge’s main structure, including its piers and deck, are progressing smoothly.
The appointed rescue contractors have given assurance that measures are in place to mitigate delays and ensure the project is completed on schedule.
“There is a new condition, whereby when a new contractor takes over a job, for instance, they start working on November 19, they have to carry out certain works on-site at least by November 19 itself.
“This (condition) is the latest instruction from the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg,” added Uggah.
For the record, the Batang Rambungan Bridge project was previously awarded to a local contractor in collaboration with a company from China.
However, the project that started on Dec 17, 2019, scheduled to be completed on Dec 16, 2022, experienced delays due to several factors such as the lack of manpower and project implementation methods, in addition to failing to be completed within the schedule set by the Sarawak JKR. — DayakDaily
