KUCHING, Jan 2: The dazzling lights of the Batang Lassa Bridge have thrilled local residents, even as its pre-inauguration was delayed due to ongoing electrical connection work despite the project being fully completed.
A report by TVS featured a photo shared by Sarawak Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Exco member Mohd Faizal Jamiludin, showcasing the remarkable achievement of this ambitious project.
Spanning 2.43 kilometres across the Batang Lassa River, the bridge is Sarawak’s second-longest river-crossing structure, constructed at a cost of RM600 million.
Daro Assemblyman Safiee Ahmad confirmed the project’s completion, noting that the pre-inauguration ceremony, initially planned for Dec 31, was postponed.
“The delay occurred because Sesco was still working on the electrical connection to the bridge at that time,” he explained.
He assured that the electricity connection has since been finalised, and the bridge is now ready for use.
“I have reached out to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD) to finalise a date for the pre-launch ceremony, ahead of the official inauguration scheduled for Feb 22, 2025, by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“For now, I am awaiting the ministry’s (MIPD) confirmation. I am confident the bridge will be opened to the public within the next few days, once all related works, including safety measures, are completed by the relevant agencies,” he said.
Safiee highlighted that this project underscores the Sarawak government’s dedication to delivering transformative initiatives for the benefit of all.
“The Batang Lassa Bridge will be a catalyst for development, significantly enhancing Daro’s economic potential, particularly in agriculture and fisheries,” he added.
Local resident Jelani Matusin, 65, expressed amazement at the bridge’s completion, calling it a dream come true for the community.
“Before the roads were built, residents, especially those in Pulau Bruit, relied entirely on rivers and the sea for transportation.
“Now, with the bridge completed, we will soon enjoy this incredible facility,” he said. —DayakDaily
