KUCHING, Sept 27: Kuching South City Hall (MBKS) is appealing to the public not to release sky lanterns or ‘Kunming lanterns’ into the sky during the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The event will be held at Malaysia-Chinese Friendship Garden (or Taman Sahabat) on Sept 29 (Friday) at 6.30pm.

MBKS mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said as with previous years, the release of Kunming lanterns is not allowed at they may pose a danger to the residential area surrounding Taman Sahabat.

“(The release) of Kunming lanterns is still not allowed because Taman Sahabat is in the middle of a housing estate. It (the release of Kunming lanterns) may pose a danger to the surrounding houses,” said Wee during a press conference which was streamed live on his social media page today.

He added that Kunming lanterns are also not allowed to be released from Taman Sahabat as it is located in close proximity with the airport and these lanterns may interfere in the flight routes of aircrafts.

Present at the press conference was MBKS deputy mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili and Persatuan Persahabatan Zong Ho Kuching president Calvin Keong. — DayakDaily
