KUCHING, Feb 6: Bangladesh is actively exploring new opportunities for collaboration beyond the human resource sector in Malaysia, including Sarawak, with a focus on the food industry.

In Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, Bangladesh’s High Commissioner, Md Shameem Ahsan, stated that the recent visit of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to Bangladesh in October last year has strengthened bilateral ties and set the stage for expanded cooperation across various sectors.

The Bangladesh High Commission and the Sarawak Business Federation (SBF) initiated this partnership two years ago by signing a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC), marking the beginning of efforts to discover new areas for collaboration.

Md Shameen emphasised the potential for mutual benefit, noting that trade relations between the two nations are already robust, with bilateral trade reaching approximately USD4 billion.

He noted that Malaysia, now the ninth-largest global investor, has vast untapped potential for further collaboration.

SBF president Dato Sri Abang Abdul Karim Tun Openg highlighted food production as a promising area for future cooperation, particularly in areas where Bangladesh excels.

He expressed interest in learning from Bangladesh’s expertise, particularly in paddy production, which aligns with Sarawak’s goal to develop its food production sector.

Both parties are considering further collaboration, possibly involving the exchange of experts in food production and technology. This collaboration could drive the growth of the food sector in Sarawak, fostering downstream industry development while tapping into Bangladesh’s advanced techniques.

The meeting, which also included SBF deputy president Datuk Philip Ting, deputy secretary-general Louis Ting, and other dignitaries, marked a significant step in building stronger ties in the food production industry between Sarawak and Bangladesh. — DayakDaily
