KUCHING, Oct 26: The Education Ministry (MoE) should involve and engage parents and the Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) in the decision-making process regarding the observance of the proposed solidarity week in support of the Palestinian cause in all government education institutions, as they have parental authority over their children in all matters, says Dr Kelvin Yii.
The Bandar Kuching MP also noted that many MPs have voiced their concerns to the Education Minister and the Deputy Education Minister, and they believe the issue should have been discussed further with the MPs to ensure that any initiative, regardless of how noble its intention, is properly implemented so as not to cause unintended consequences and sow discord among students.
“The Education Ministry should reconsider the administrative directive for schools to hold a ‘full solidarity week’ in support for the Palestinian cause, but instead find other ways to raise awareness on this important issue, such as focusing more on educating our children more on compassion, respect for humanity, and respect for one another regardless of race, religion, or background,” he said in a statement issued today.
Dr Yii went on to say that the Palestinian cause is an important matter, and not just a cause for a single religion or people group, but a cause for humanity, justice, and freedom.
He continued, “While we stand in solidarity with those who have been oppressed and discriminated (against) in this tragic war, especially Palestinians and all innocent civilians tragically lost in this conflict, we should be cautious in dragging this complicated conflict into schools at the risk of instigating extreme hate and condemnation against one another, which does not help in this matter.”
Dr Yii further remarked that hatred never ceases by hatred, but hatred ceases by compassionate love. — DayakDaily
