Bandar Kuching MP urges JKR to provide advance notice on road closures to avoid inconveniencing motorists

KUCHING, March 9: Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii has urged the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak to provide the public with advance notice on road closures rather than last minute announcements.

He was referring to the road advisory issued by JKR Sarawak Samarahan Division only this morning regarding the temporary road closure or diversions at the Setia Raja roundabout that has started today and is expected to last until March 18 to facilitate construction works as part of the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway upgrading project.

“I have received complaints from the public, especially road users in the area, how such last minute notices have caused all kinds of inconvenience to them.

“Moreover, the road closure will cause heavier traffic congestion in the area that is already very congested,” he said in a statement today.

As such, Dr Yii suggested to JKR Sarawak to communicate early with contractors involved to have a clear timeline for each segment of the construction.

“Then, make an earlier announcement on any changes for the benefit of road users.

“This also includes temporary traffic management to cater for the closures of the affected roads so as to ensure traffic flow is not too affected (by the road works),” he said.

Meanwhile, motorists are advised to drive carefully and abide by all traffic management instructions when approaching the Setia Raja roundabout as there are some major changes to the traffic flow in the area.

Road users are advised to plan their journeys ahead if they need to travel to the affected area. — DayakDaily
