MIRI, March 9: An old playground near Pasar Besar Krokop will be converted into a parking lot to resolve traffic congestion and illegal parking problems due to inadequate parking spaces in the city.

Miri City Council (MCC) mayor Adam Yii announced this project following complaints from the public.

“The parking lot with a one-way traffic flow will be able to accommodate 60 cars and over 10 motorcycles. A proper drainage system will also be constructed to prevent flooding.

“The completion of this project is expected to reduce traffic congestion, resolve inadequate parking spaces and illegal parking problems as well as to ensure safety of pedestrians,” he said in a news report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) today.

With construction works to commence soon, Yii, who is also Pujut assemblyman, said that the contractor has agreed to carry out works after 10am in order to prevent traffic congestion in the peak hours in the morning.

With that, Yii also called for collaboration from the public so that the contractor will be able to carry out the works smoothly and safely.

“The Council will continue to monitor the progress and quality of the project,” he added. — DayakDaily
