KUCHING, July 23: Amid the speeches and performances at the Sarawak Day 2026 Assembly, it was an unexpected guest that stole the spotlight: a humanoid robot dressed in traditional Baju Burung.

The robot made its entrance onto the stage at Dataran Tun Tuanku Haji Bujang wearing the ceremonial warrior attire before performing the Ngajat to the accompaniment of traditional music, drawing loud cheers and applause from the crowd.

One of the evening’s most memorable moments came when Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar walked over to greet the robot. The pair shook hands before exchanging a playful high-five, prompting laughter and applause from those watching.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Deputy Premiers and other guests also looked on as the robot made its appearance during the celebration.

Its appearance added a fresh twist to this year’s Sarawak Day celebration, showing how technology can be presented alongside the State’s cultural heritage while preserving the significance of the occasion.

Held under the theme ‘Sarawak Maju Makmur, Segulai Sejalai’ (Progressive, Prosperous Sarawak, Together As One), this year’s Sarawak Day celebration featured official ceremonies, religious events, community activities and cultural performances. — DayakDaily
