KUCHING, July 23: AirBorneo marked a new phase in its growth with the launch of its Kuching-Singapore service on Sarawak Day, as the State-owned carrier begins expanding its regional network to complement Sarawak’s broader transport ecosystem.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the milestone came just two days after AirBorneo commenced commercial jet operations between Kuching and Kuala Lumpur on July 20, with Jakarta set to become its next international destination in two months.
“Today, our own airline is flying to Singapore. In the next two months, our own airline will also fly to Jakarta.
“This is part of our development in the aviation sector that will have a significant impact on our economy,” he said when addressing the Sarawak Day 2026 Assembly in Sibu on Wednesday (July 22).
Abang Johari said AirBorneo is a key component of the Sarawak government’s long-term strategy to improve connectivity while driving economic growth through greater trade, tourism and investment.
He said the airline would also create more opportunities for Sarawakians and businesses by improving access to regional markets.
The Premier added that AirBorneo complements the State’s wider transport network, alongside investments in roads, airports and the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system, to build a more efficient, integrated and sustainable mobility ecosystem.
He said the first phase of the hydrogen hub supporting the ART system is scheduled for completion by the end of this year, marking another milestone in Sarawak’s transition towards green public transport.
“The project proves that hydrogen technology is no longer just a concept for the future, but is becoming a reality in Sarawak,” he said, adding that the State hopes its experience will serve as a reference for the wider adoption of hydrogen as a future energy source. — DayakDaily
