KUCHING, Nov 29: CRAUN Research Sdn Bhd has just won the ASEAN Energy Awards in Phnom Penh for its research on sago, which shows its promising effects in regulating blood glucose levels.

Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn when delivering his winding up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) here today said in today’s modern diet, most processed foods contain gluten, a protein that is found in grains such as wheat, barley and rye.

“Unfortunately, there are among us who suffer from gluten intolerance, a condition with symptoms ranging from stomach discomfort to nausea and fatigue, and in extreme cases leading to damage in the digestive system.

“We potentially have the answer to this health condition right here in Sarawak, in the form of our sago plant.

“Animal and human trial studies by our CRAUN Research have shown that sago is low in glycaemic index, and has blood glucose regulating effects in diabetic rats and in healthy human models,” said Sagah.

He said CRAUN is presently conducting trials to investigate the effect of sago in type-2 diabetes patients and it was his hope that the outcome of this research will be able to position Sarawak’s sago products in the health food industry.

Meanwhile, he explained that CRAUN has won the ASEAN Energy Awards for its research on renewable energy from biomass produced by the sago industry.
