KUCHING, July 14: The Sarawak Bonsai Association (SBA) will hold a Bonsai workshop on July 27 to cultivate interest among Sarawak’s multiracial society.
Its president Johnson Jong said, for example, in Sarawak, it’s mostly the Chinese who are interested in Bonsai. But in Indonesia, it is a hobby that is starting to get picked up by anyone, regardless of race.
He added that even in West Malaysia, some association presidents are from the Malay community.
“I encourage our local Malay and Iban communities here to participate in this as a hobby,” he told a press conference at La Promenade Mall today.
He added that if well taken care of, Bonsai displays can generate income.
“I hope that this hobby will be picked up by our multiracial society here in Sarawak,” he said.
Meanwhile, the organising chairman for the 2023 Bonsai and Suiseki Championship, Hayes Teo, said this year’s championship had attracted 209 participants from Kuching, Sri Aman, Sibu, and Miri.
“The competition will be judged by two international juries from Taiwan and another three from West Malaysia.
“This year, we have the extra large category and members of the public are encouraged to come and enjoy the good 185 artworks displayed by competitors,” he said.
The 2023 Sarawak Open Bonsai and Suiseki Championship will be held at La Promenade Mall from July 20 to 30.
