KUCHING, Sept 21: Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspirasi) will contest in the Stampin seat in the coming 15th General Election (GE15).
Party president Lina Soo and chairman George Young Si Ricord Junior, in announcing this today, have not revealed the name of the potential candidate.
“Our potential candidate for Stampin is a very competent and qualified candidate who holds a Doctorate degree and has many years of corporate experience in the international sphere.
“Aspirasi’s potential candidate for Stampin whose name and profile shall be announced in due course, is willing to serve the people in Stampin and Sarawak in the peoples’ pursuit of economic wealth and getting our natural resources back, especially oil and gas,” the leaders said.
Aspirasi believes that this is consistent with the party’s aspiration in seeking to restore Sarawak’s sovereignty and international right to self-determination.
The Stampin seat has been under Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) since 2013. Presently, it is being held by Chong Chieng Jen, who is also DAP chairman, after he defeated Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) president Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian in the 2018 general election.
Chong replaced DAP Julian Tan Kok Ping who had decided not to defend the seat after serving as its MP from 2013 to 2018.
In the 2013 general election, Tan who was a newcomer then defeated SUPP’s heavyweight and three-term Stampin MP Datuk Yong Khoon Seng (1999-2013). — DayakDaily
