KUCHING, Jan 30: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that all federal and state disaster relief assets have been mobilised to 13 flood-affected locations across Sarawak.
According to a news report by Bernama, he said the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) would also coordinate with relevant parties including the Ministry of Education to determine schools and community halls located on higher grounds that could be used as temporary relief centres.
Currently, 48 temporary relief centres are operating and sheltering more than 6,597 evacuees of the flood and landslide disasters here.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also chairman of NADMA, said the team is looking into the need for the construction of Bailey bridges in areas where roads have been cut off due to the flood.
“We have discussed with the Royal Engineers Corps regarding the preparations for the construction of these bridges,” he was quoted as saying at a press conference after inspecting the Sekolah Menengah Imtiaz Tuminah Hamidi construction project.
He also announced that an early warning system had been activated to provide at least three days’ notice before high tide events. This could hopefully assist in the evacuation process and help residents in their early preparations to evacuate their residences if needed. – DayakDaily
