KUCHING, March 23: An alarming 10 dog bite cases, all which have since tested positive for rabies, have been reported this week across Kuching, Samarahan, Bau, Serian and Bintulu, with two involving stray dogs and the rest involving free-roaming pet dogs.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng expressed shocked upon receiving the report.
The cases involving stray dogs were detected at Jalan Belatok and Stapok Selatan; both areas within Padawan.
For cases involving free roaming pets, they were reported in Kampung Mambong in Padawan; Jalan Stakan Melayu in Samarahan; Sungai Tengah in Matang; Kampung Peros in Bau; Kampung Reteh Karan, Kampung Tarat Melawi and Kampung Lanchang Sabai in Serian and Sungai Plan in Bintulu.
“Last week, there were two cases and it jumped to 10 cases this week. The public should be aware that it has spread to other areas.
“The public needs to take this matter more seriously to help curb and fight rabies in Sarawak by ensuring that their pet animals are vaccinated against rabies,” he said during his ShallWeeTalk Facebook live today.
While the rabies situation remains controllable and preventable, Wee emphasised the need for concrete action from the public, especially pet owners, to prevent the situation from escalating into another disaster. — DayakDaily
