KUCHING, March 31: AirAsia will resume Penang-Kuching and Penang-Kota Kinabalu direct flights starting March 31.
The first flight from Penang today, AK5432, carrying 160 passengers landed safely at 3.30pm and was welcomed by AirAsia Sarawak Affairs head Hamdam Mohamad and Tourism Malaysia Sarawak director Nurul Mohammed Yunus together with airline staff, according to a press release.
Speaking to reporters after welcoming the arrival of the passengers, Nurul said it was the right call for AirAsia to resume direct flights from Kuching to Penang and other states to enable travelers to explore other states domestically.
“With the additional direct flight options added between Kuching, Penang and other cities, of course it boosts the domestic flight industry and it opens up more selections for Sarawakians to spend their holidays exploring cities besides only Kuala Lumpur,” she said.
The Penang-Kuching and Penang-Kota Kinabalu flights are schedule twice daily.
Meanwhile, Hamdan said AirAsia now has a total of seven direct flights from Kuching to areas within and outside of Sarawak, namely to Miri, Sibu, Bintulu, Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, Kota Bahru and the recently resumed direct flight to Penang.
He added that Sarawak now also has direct international flights from Kuching to Singapore and Jakarta via AirAsia.
On another note, Hamdan disclosed that AirAsia would include midnight flight options three days before and after the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.
He said the extra flights would give customers more flexible options. — DayakDaily
