KUCHING, Oct 17: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data are now seen as key catalysts in achieving the vision outlined by Sarawak through its Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
In a news report by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), Sarawak Minister for Utility and Telecommunication (MUT), Datuk Sri Julaihi Narawi, stated that the combination of these two elements can assist the Sarawak government in identifying current needs and formulating strategies for future actions.
Citing the role of AI and data in modernising the energy sector, he explained that both are being used to reshape the energy industry, revolutionising energy generation, distribution, and consumption.
“For instance, AI will enable smart grid management by monitoring and controlling the flow of electricity in real time.
“By integrating renewable energy sources, storage systems, and demand response, AI will help balance supply and demand while maximising the use of renewable energy,” he elaborated.
He said this during his keynote address at the 2024 Sarawak International Digital Economy Conference (IDECS24) at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today.
Further elaborating, he noted that AI algorithms can analyse vast amounts of data from energy systems, including power grids and renewable energy sources, leading to more efficient energy use and reduced carbon emissions.
Julaihi, who is also the minister responsible for IDECS24, added that beyond the energy sector, AI and data can be leveraged to help Sarawak realise its ambition of becoming a food exporter by 2030.
“By harnessing the latest digital technologies such as AI, the Internet of Things (IoT), and data analytics, Sarawak can accelerate the transition to smart and precision agriculture.
“This transition will not only boost crop yields and productivity but also improve overall production efficiency and market access. These advancements are crucial as we strive to meet Sarawak’s food security agenda,” he further explained.
Also present at the event were MUT deputy minister Datuk Liwan Lagang, Chairman of Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (SAINS) Tan Sri Datuk Patinggi Dr George Chan Hong Nam, General Manager of Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) Dato Dr Anderson Tiong Ing Heng, and MUT permanent secretary Datu Jafri Lias. — DayakDaily
