SEBAUH, Sept 12: “I want to bring this longhouse concept to Pahang,” says Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah before ending his visit at Rh Raymond Plen, Sungai Gelam here yesterday (Sept 11).
Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah and the royal couple’s children also participated in the visit in conjunction with the ‘Kembara Kenali Borneo’ royal tour which commenced on Sept 3.
“This is my first time going to a longhouse. It is very fun here. It is a little bit hot but it’s a good way to lose weight,” the King jokingly said, as his statement was greeted by laughter by the longhouse residents.
Malaysian Minister of Works Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said that the presence of the royal family was very meaningful to Rh Raymond Plen’s residents who had made months’ worth of preparations as such an opportunity is very rare.
“As early as 6am, the longhouse residents whether old or young, young children or adults, all wore colorful clothes, a symbol of the traditional Iban community here.
“I was no exception. I wore the Iban men’s traditional clothes known as ‘baju burung’ while my wife (Datin Sri Angelina Celestine Ujang) wore the blue kebaya which is also one of the Iban women’s traditional clothes. It felt like celebrating Gawai.
“Thank you Tuanku Agong and Raja Permaisuri Agong. Your humility and kindness are an example to us all,” he said in a Facebook post today.
