SIBU, Sept 8: The public, particularly those in the lower income group, can still enjoy the RM5 Menu Rahmah rice dish, even in light of the recent increase in the price of imported rice.
Sibu Coffee Shop and Restaurant Owner Association chairman Tong Ing Kok reassured the public by stating that the association will continue providing packs of cooking oil to the participating outlets.
“We will continue giving packs of cooking oil to the participating outlets as an incentive for them to maintain the Menu Rahmah,” Tong said.
Tong emphasised that the recent price hike of imported rice should not be used as an excuse to discontinue offering the Menu Rahmah.
“Participating outlets can still use local white rice, as the price is capped at RM2.60 per kg,” he explained.
Additionally, Tong urged eateries not to raise the prices of their rice dishes due to the increased cost of imported rice.
“Do not increase the price of your rice dish just because the cost of imported rice has gone up. Maintain the current price to avoid burdening the public,” he advised.
Tong encouraged eateries to allow the government to address the current situation, where the price of imported rice has surged.
“Do not hastily increase the price of your rice dish, as the government is actively working to resolve the issue,” Tong added.
Padiberas Nasional Bhd (Bernas) recently announced a 36 per cent increase in the price of imported white rice, rising to RM3,200 per metric tonne from RM2,350 per metric tonne.
This price hike was influenced by several factors, including climate change-related crop reduction in rice-exporting countries, a weakening ringgit, and export bans by India, the world’s largest rice exporter. — DayakDaily
