KUCHING, Aug 14: Any weaknesses in managing the South China Sea situation must be addressed within the framework of international law to ensure discussions benefit all parties, said Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He stressed that such an approach would pave the way for win-win outcomes, citing past incidents involving foreign vessels in Malaysian waters which, he noted, should be regarded as activities in the South China Sea rather than intrusions.

“I believe there must be solutions if certain weaknesses exist. As Dato Sri Amran (Ministry of Foreign Affairs Secretary-General Datuk Amran Mohamed Zin) mentioned earlier, by adhering to international law and engaging in discussions within that framework, it will certainly lead to a win-win situation for both parties,” he said when met by reporters at the State Gala Dinner held in conjunction with the 24th ASEAN-China Senior Officials’ Meeting on the Implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties (DOC) at a hotel here last night (Aug 13).

The Premier also expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for selecting Kuching as the meeting venue, given Sarawak’s strategic location facing the South China Sea.

“I believe these engagements will strengthen ties between both sides and further enhance ASEAN-China cooperation, particularly on legal matters related to the South China Sea,” he noted.

In his speech earlier, Abang Johari called on ASEAN and China to remain steadfast in ensuring the South China Sea remains a peaceful and prosperous region, stressing the importance of constructive cooperation and stability.

“This meeting signifies our collective efforts to realise our shared commitment
to peace, stability and constructive cooperation in the South China Sea.

“This region is our shared home, and together, we have the responsibility to ensure it remains a sea of peace and prosperity,” he said. — DayakDaily
