SIBU, Nov 15: Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) P211 Lanang candidate Wong Ching Yong’s plan to build an aquatic centre in Sibu Jaya has come true.

“Premier (Datuk Patinggi) Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg last night announced that he has agreed to the project. This is good news not only for Sibu Jaya residents but the people of Sibu,” said Wong at a press conference here today.

He said the project costing RM52 million will consist of an Olympic size swimming pool and diving pool built to international standards.

“I met the Premier yesterday morning with a draft of the project before he announced it last night. He also wants to see more Pandelela (national diving queen Dato Pandelela Rinong Pamg) and Olympic and world champions produced,” said Wong.

Wong who is the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party Dudong chairman believed that the facility will strengthen Sibu Jaya which already has an international standard stadium, as a sports hub.

He also revealed that Abang Johari has agreed a grant of RM1 million for Citizen Middle School to rebuild its hostel which was destroyed in a fire in 2020.

“The school has collected RM160,000 from donations which is not enough. The Premier said his deputy, Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian will make the necessary arrangement on the grant,” he added.

Wong had previously said he will fight for RM1 billion in funding if he wins P211 Lanang in the 15th General Election (GE15). Among the projects he had planned was the aquatic centre.

He had also pledged to donate all of his MP salary to five Chinese independent schools, including Citizen Middle School. — DayakDaily
