MIRI, Jan 13: A fire broke out at a section of the Sarawak-Sabah Gas Pipeline (SSGP) near a Penan settlement area at Ba’Selulung, upper Baram, in the wee hours today.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said it was believed that the incident might have occurred between 2am and 3am.

“Gas leakage was suspected to be the cause of the incident. Petronas technicians are on their way to the scene to investigate further,” he said when contacted.

The fire could be seen from a nearby village at Long Kevok, located some two hours’ drive from Ba Selulong.

SSGP is a RM4 bilion project by Petronas that started about a decade ago to channel gas from Kimanis in Sabah to Bintulu port for processing and export. The pipeline is about 600km long.

In May last year, a gas leak was detected at the SSGP station BV106 in Long Segaman, Lawas. — DayakDaily
