KUCHING, Nov 4: The rhythmic beat of drums echoes through the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) grounds this morning as Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng is warmly welcomed to the Council’s 2025 Deepavali celebration; a vibrant affair that shimmers with music, smiles, and a shared spirit of togetherness.
The celebration, attended by around 460 people including councillors, MBKS staff, invited guests, and members of the public, turned the venue into a lively scene of cultural expression and togetherness.
The event began with Wee lighting the oil lamp, a ritual symbolising the triumph of light over darkness, a gesture that officially marked the start of the festivities.

Wee, in his speech, reminded all that the essence of Deepavali transcends cultural borders.
“Light always conquers darkness, and truth and goodness will always overcome negativity and fear,” he said.
He noted that MBKS’s tradition of celebrating every major festival, from Chinese New Year to Hari Gawai Dayak, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Christmas, and Deepavali, reflected the Council’s spirit of inclusivity and unity.
“These gatherings are not just about celebration, they are about connection,” he said. “They remind us that we work better when we work together.”
The mayor also paid tribute to MBKS staff for their dedication in keeping Kuching South “clean, green, safe, and welcoming”, emphasising that every individual effort, no matter how small, contributes to the Council’s collective brightness.
“When each small light comes together, we can brighten even the darkest space,” he said, drawing a parallel between the festival’s message and the Council’s teamwork.

As Wee concluded his speech, he called on everyone to carry the light of Deepavali beyond the walls of the Council.
“Let us continue to uphold our good reputation and keep the spirit of service alive. Together, we will continue to shine for Kuching South.”
A series of cultural performances followed; traditional Indian dances and songs, each met with enthusiastic applause. The audience swayed along to the lively rhythms, and the atmosphere was one of shared joy and warm camaraderie.

For many, the highlight of the day was not just the performances or the colourful decorations, but the sense of belonging that filled the air.
As the celebration continued with food, laughter, and friendly conversations, the message of the morning lingered: that unity, respect, and understanding remain the heart of every celebration under MBKS. —DayakDaily
