SIBU, Oct 31: Police here believe they have solved a spate of shop break-in cases with the arrests of nine boys aged between 11 to 16.
Sibu District police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said today that the group was alleged to have committed nine cases involving a total loss of RM10,500.
“At about 7.20am on Oct 29, the police received a report of breaking in and theft at a coffee shop in the town centre.
“Acting on information, nine boys aged between 11 to 16 years were successfully arrested at several locations on Oct 29 and 30 around the town,” he said.
Several items were also confiscated to be used as evidence to help the investigation.
Zulkipli added that some of the suspects are still in school.
“The modus operandi of the group is to target coffee shops and retail shops that are not equipped with CCTV cameras during the late night and early morning. They broke in by pulling up roller shutter doors and stole goods and money,” Zulkipli added.
The suspects have been remanded until Nov 3 for further investigation under Section 457 of the Penal Code.
The section provides for a maximum jail term of 14 years and liable to a fine and whipping for the second and subsequent offences. — DayakDaily
