MIRI, Oct 9: The owner of an iron scrap mill and at least eight of his workers were rushed to the hospital today following a gas leak incident that was detected at around 10am.

It is understood that a small explosion was heard, but there was no fire.

Six of the victims are Malaysians, two are Indonesians and one a Bangladeshi. They are aged between 30 something and 59-year-old. They became ill after breathing in the gas.

Firefighters spraying the affected area to neutralised it from the leaked gas.

The mill is located near Kampung Sealine in Lutong, and the origin of the gas leak is still unknown as at press time, although there is speculation that the leak occurred after an excavator accidentally ran over a gas cylinder.

A source disclosed that the mill workers use gas for welding purposes.

Firefighters from Lopeng and Miri stations rushed to the scene when the alarm was raised. As at press time, they were still monitoring the area while all victims were reported to be in stable condition. — DayakDaily
