KUCHING, Jan 15: A devastating fire has completely destroyed a 16-door longhouse, Rh Paulus Yan, in Sungai Bawan, Kanowit, leaving its 88 residents displaced.
According to a report by the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), an emergency call was received at 12.14pm today and firefighters from the Kanowit station were immediately deployed, assisted by firefighters from Sungai Merah station.
Both teams arrived on the scene via rescue boats at 1.15pm but found that the longhouse was 100 per cent burnt.
The longhouse was home to 88 people. All residents are safe and no injuries were reported.
After assessing the situation using the RECEO concept, firefighters deployed an extinguish defensive method by using a 300 feet floating pump and a 500 feet portable pump, sourcing water from a nearby river.
The teams managed to control the fire by 2pm and ended their operations by 4.50pm after doing the overhaul work and ensuring the situation is safe. – DayakDaily
