KUCHING, July 16: Getting a haircut and facial grooming from 81-year-old master barber Chai Ko Yin is a sheer delight.

For over six decades, Chai has been a steadfast presence in the barbering community, earning a reputation for his exceptional skill and dedication to his craft.

As one of the city’s oldest practicing barbers, he remains passionate about his work, refusing to retire his beloved pair of scissors.

Chai began his journey at 18 after receiving permission from his father to pursue an apprenticeship at a barber school in Kuching.

Upon graduation, he gained experience by working with various barbers in the city, honing his skills and crafts.

With self-belief and confidence in his mastery of the scissors, Chai decided to start his own business. In 1992, he rented a small space on China Street, where he continues to operate today.

“Back in those years when I started hair-cutting for young men and the general public, we hardly had long hairstyles. Over the years, even though I do not follow hairstyle fashion, it is pretty much the same,” Chai told DayakDaily.

“These days, I notice men and boys have 50s hairstyles. I like people with short and clean haircuts. To look and feel good, we groom ourselves that way.”

Chai’s tools of the trade, which he has used throughout his career, are European-made scissors and clippers.

“I do not know how much they cost now. I also have some Chinese and Japanese-made scissors and clippers. Now, we use battery or electric-operated trimmers or clippers to make my job faster and easier,” he explained.

Initially, Chai only offered haircuts but later expanded his services to include shaving, washing, dyeing, and other grooming services at the request of his customers.

His enthusiasm for his craft sees him commuting daily from his home in Matang, about 20 miles from his barbershop, on his motorbike.

Chai’s tools may look old, but they are of great quality and in excellent working condition.

“I do not know when to retire as I am always at the shop before 8am and waiting for my customers. I am always happy to give them my service,” he shared.

While Chai’s children have pursued different professions, he remains content with their choices. “They are of different generations,” he said.

Despite fewer customers and increased competition, Chai remains undeterred and encourages young people to join the profession.

“It is a respected and skilled profession that provides good income. At this age, if you still have the energy, you can still do it,” he said.

Chai’s shop, Nam Hua Hair Barber Centre, is located at 38 China Street, Kuching. He operates daily except Sunday from 8am to 3pm. For more information, call 012-872 8025. — DayakDaily
